BMW i8 plug-in hybrid vs. Porsche 911 Carrera S

BMW is known to have benchmarked the Porsche 911 during the i8 plug-in hybrid’s gestation. The result is that, at least on paper, the two cars hit 60 mph from rest within 0.3 seconds of one another and, with a little options list tweakery, cost the same, too.

While the Porsche is the purer sports car, however, the BMW is multi-faceted and can travel commutable distances on electric power alone. It also features a revolutionary carbon fiber passenger cell and has electric motor-enabled all-wheel drive. It is, in a nutshell, more obviously clever (read our review to find out more).

Ultimately it’s still a performance car, though, and as such will be measured by its ability to stand toe-to-toe with the segment’s long-standing heroes. So, can the BMW i8 see off a power-kitted Porsche 911 Carrera S? Evo finds out.
