Toyota Prius hybrid racer takes to the track in Japan (w/Video)

APR Racing has built a Prius like no other. Constructed to compete in Japan’s Super GT racing series, it features a 3.4 liter V-8 engine instead of the regular car’s 1.8 liter four. It also has been widened front and rear and sports a splitter up front and a massive diffuser in the rear to generate aerodynamic downforce.

It is still a hybrid, but now the hybrid components are built into the passenger area foot well instead of under the hood. It has a real transmission, too, instead of the wimply CVT found in the production car.

The 2016 racing series begins April 9 at the Okayama International Circuit in southern Japan.
